Art For Independence
I’m disabled, creative, and determined.. even when my body makes life harder than it needs to be.
Art has become more than just something I enjoy. It’s how I cope, how I process, and how I keep going on the days when pain, fatigue, and physical limitations try to take over. Creating gives me purpose when my disability takes so much away.
Every piece of artwork you see here is created during moments where I’m working around pain, low energy, and barriers that most people never have to consider. This isn’t art made despite disability.. it exists because of it.
An active wheelchair isn’t a luxury.. it’s independence. And it comes at a significant cost.
A properly fitted active wheelchair typically costs between £3,000 and £7,000 or more, depending on individual needs, specialist measurements, and custom adjustments. For many disabled people, that cost is simply out of reach.
While NHS Wheelchair Services do exist, they are under extreme demand. Waiting lists are long, assessments can take months, and many people wait years for a chair that fully meets their needs.. if they’re able to access one at all.
Because of my health conditions and my size, I need a chair that is fully fitted to me.. not a standard or off-the-shelf option. I need something that works with my body, not against it. A chair that reduces pain, protects my joints, and allows me to move safely and independently.
I’ve chosen not to use GoFundMe or JustGiving. I’m not someone who feels comfortable asking for money without giving something in return. That matters to me.
That’s why I’m selling my artwork instead.
Every piece I create represents time, energy, pain, and resilience turned into something tangible. When you support my art, you’re not just contributing financially.. you’re receiving something meaningful, while helping me work towards mobility and independence.
This isn’t charity.
It’s exchange.
Creativity for freedom.
If you’ve taken the time to read this, share it, or support my work in any way..
Thank you.
You’re helping me turn creativity into mobility, and that means more than I can put into words.
My Perspective
I already use a powerchair, and it has given me a level of freedom and independence I never thought I’d have.. truly.
But the truth is, I want to be more active again.
On the days I’m chair-bound, I don’t want my upper body, strength, or mobility to fade through inactivity.
I’m putting the work in to exercise my arms, shoulders, and upper body, and an active wheelchair allows me to take that further..
Using my own strength to get from A to B.
It also gives me options when my powerchair isn’t practical, especially in bad weather or on uneven ground. Most importantly, it means I can still get outside, enjoy nature, and move through the world using wheels, without giving up my health or my independence.
I’ve found a chair that feels like the right place to start.. It’s around £600–£1,000, depending on the fitting.
For me, this is about getting used to it properly and learning to use it as my legs: leaning, navigating curbs and steps, moving through narrow doorways and aisles, and handling different terrains.
I’m thinking practical first, rather than going straight for a high-end or trendy model. Once I’m confident and fully comfortable, I might upgrade in the future. But for now, the most important thing is that the chair fits me and my needs, and helps me gain independence safely.. not how much it costs or what brand it is.
So if that means I’m turning my living room into a canvas kingdom for the next year.
Best.
Year.
Ever!
